Learning crafts
Children are helped and supported to meet the appropriate learning goals for their age through assessment, planning and organisation of activities designed to work at the child's own pace.

Settling in

Before a child joins my setting I ensure that the child and parent/carer attends a welcome meeting where I can establish the needs of the child and we can meet in a welcoming and relaxed environment. I help children to settle into my care by offering a settling in period where parents/carers can attend the setting with their child and gradually settle them in at their own pace. In this time I can get to know a child and this helps me to make transition easier for them. I work closely with parents ensuring I follow the child's normal routine as closely as possible.

Welfare
  • Each child will remain solely under my supervision at all times.
  • My aim is to safe guard and promote the welfare of children in my care.
  • I always make sure parents are aware of the type of activities I provide for their children.
  • I have a currant pediatric first aid certificate and have first aid supplies at home and in my vehicle.
  • I provide a daily routine to suit each individual child.
  • I will only allow the children to come into contact with other suitable adults whilst in my care (i.e. playgroups etc).
  • I will ensure food and drinks agreed with each parent according to dietary requirements of that child and will be provided at suitable times.
  • I will take into account any special health requirements a child may have.
  • Children will only be released to agreed persons of the parent/guardian of that child.
  • Emergency contact numbers will be taken from parents.
  • Any complaints will be dealt with and recorded appropriately. However I have not yet received any complaints.
  • There is a strict no smoking policy at home, in vehicles or anywhere where it is possible to come into contact with children.
  • Children are extremely well-protected from illness and infection, as I maintain a very clean and healthy environment.
  • Children are provided with colour coded towels and face clothes which are replaced on a daily basis.
  • We have a no shoe rule to prevent the risk of contamination to areas children play on the floor
Premises
  • I am very safety conscious at home and have adapted it accordingly with stair gates, locking cupboards and providing safe toys etc.
  • I use risk assessments to ensure children are safe from hazards.
  • Whilst at home, measures will be taken to prevent intruders and secure children safely within the home.
  • I have a fire procedure, smoke alarms and fire blanket.
  • Children have access to a supervised enclosed outdoor play area.
  • Within a short walk from the property there is Gorran Haven beach and a children’s park, which we often visit.
  • Accidents are all recorded in line with OFSTED policy.
Food and Meals

  • A large percentage of food I offer is organic.
  • We enjoy regular picnics when the weather allows us.
  • We eat around the table when at home.
  • Meals can be provided or children can bring a packed lunch.
  • Children will often help come and buy local produce to help them understand and learn where food originates.
  • I liaise with each parent/guardian for any special dietary requirements a child may have.
  • Children are encouraged to get involved with the making of snacks and meals.
  • I vary meals to offer a good range of food depending on seasons and even festivals to promote learning from food.
  • In season children are taken fruit picking which they always enjoy.
